Taksini - a Modern Transport Solution

A digital platform to support Lähitaksi's business needs utilised by easy-to-use and customer-friendly mobile application.

Taksini

When Finnish taxi legislation changed, Lähitaksi needed to improve their digital service to match the offering from competition. The solution needed to be quick to develop and modern without requiring huge investments on the background infrastructure. HiQ assisted Lähitaksi by creating simple and robust solution based on Frends integration platform supporting not only current needs but enabling efficient future development.

On this foundation HiQ designed, developed and released a mobile app. The app was designed to provide consumers with top-tier user experience and to enable new business models for Lähitaksi. The app is called Taksini, an easy way to get and ride a taxi and it has already been downloaded over 100 000 times.

The app's design enables users to take a taxi without typing in a line, tracking orders in real time and pay comfortably right in the app. All travelled routes, finished rides and receipts are also stored in the app.

We created a fully customized icon set for Taksini which was converted into a font for easy implementation.

Supporting the diversity of the fleet

Unlike many other actors, Taksini service area covers 24 municipalities in Finland, including the whole metropolitan area. The app also supports Lähitaksi’s vast range of 1 500 cars including everything from classy sedans to more spacious options.

When ordering a ride, pickup point can be selected from map or typed in. After placing and order the pickup point and an estimated arrival time are showed on the map. Pickup can be as soon as possible but the app also supports pre-orders, ensuring a ride for any moment in time you wish.

When the car is approaching the pickup point a notification is received. And when destination is reached, the payment can be handled traditionally or comfortably right in the app. Credit cards can be added to the profile, and when paying with the app receipts are always sent directly to user's email.

Modern onboarding without additional passwords for the user to remember. Instead app is activated using one time password sent to the mobile phone.

"I am very happy of the fact that Lähitaksi chose HiQ as their partner in digitalization. It is most interesting to be involved in creating the future of taxi services. And that work has just started."

The architecture that makes it tick

The frontend applications and the backend systems are flexibly interconnected with HiQ's Frends integration platform. This enables modern application development on top of not-so-modern backend systems extending their lifespan. Reusable APIs enable future development also beyond the Taksini app, should it be the taxi center, driver, hotel or some more innovative implementation. This means improved competitiveness and envisions innovative future business possibilities.

Due to the flexible architecture app too was fast to develop. The Taksini application was brought publicly for all users to download in fall 2018. After the initial launch, development has proceeded. DevOps team continually improves the app employing intelligence gathered from the app usage.

"The development of the Taksini application is just beginning. It is our intention to add truly innovative features to it in the near future," says Jukka Rautio, Managing Director of HiQ Finland

Taxis industry is one of the areas in which technological development is highly influential. New ways of thinking and technical possibilities will revolutionize the entire transport sector in the near future.

HiQ works with a number of large taxi companies in the Nordic countries to create future digital transport ecosystems. City residents want to move from one place to another quickly, flexibly and easily.

"The rapid development of technology and ever-tightening cities will increase the need for flexible and simple transport systems. Taxis play an important role in this development."
